Work life balance is another much needed discussion topic within the HRM functions. Specially in our industries this will be a valuable discussing point with the challenge of most of them are focusing on the extra workings.  

Work life balance can be identified as an employee’s capacity to handle both professional & personal commitments while having enough time for relaxation as well, (peoplehum, 2024). Therefore, employee should be encouraged to share his time with family, health, vacations, friends along with the career life.

Importance & benefits of work life balance

Workers with physical or mental health issues find it difficult to concentrate at work and it turns to less productive, and they could be unable to get the intended outcomes, (Wilson, 2020). This will results a decrease in both personal satisfaction & career growth as well.

According to MBA Skool Team (2024), some benefits for the organization of work-life balance has mentioned.

  • Relieve employee stress
  • High productivity compared to over worked employees
  • Increasing the healthiness of employees
  • More involvement in business growth & innovations
  • Reduce turnovers 


Causes for poor work-life balance

Its important to identify the possible causes what could affect for poor work-life balance. According to BambooHR team (2023), three main causes has been identified

  • Insufficient salaries and wages
  • Over loading due to increased responsibilities
  • Long working hours

Strategies for support work-life balance in organization

From the employer’s point of view they should need to support their employees to establish the work-life balance. According to Leyshon (2023), some practices has given for employers that can be affected. These could be applied according to the nature of the jobs.

  1. Offer flexible & remote working – empower employees to mange their own time while knowing they are still getting the job done
  2. Encourage productivity rather than hours – focus on the particular tasks without considering hors worked.
  3. Regular review workloads – review the allocations of duties to ensure they are within the capacity of workload
  4. Provide support for parents – giving the support for the needs & engagements with their children.
  5. Time off policies – supporting to take leaves such as vacation days, personal days off.
  6. Offer benefits - encouraging employees to take up activities outside of work
  7. Lead by example – ensure the mangers have the proper work life balance as well

Conclusion

Most occasions it seems like people are getting into mind whether they are live to work or work to live. Everyone has personal expectations and needs to have engagement with their family. Some employees are enjoying their job, but some are not. The reason for such would be the improper work-life balance. Therefore, it’s very important to establish a work-life balance culture within the organization. Both of the parties will get benefits as the mentally and physically health employees with a positive & motivational approach is the real asset to an any organization.
